University Distinguished Professor, Dennis P. Nyquist Endowed Professor in Electromagnetics
Biography
Leo C. Kempel, the Dennis P. Nyquist Endowed Professor of Electromagnetics, has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1998. He served as the ninth dean of the Michigan State University College of Engineering from 2014 to 2024, acting dean and associate dean for research from 2008 to 2013, associate dean for special initiatives from 2006 to 2008, and the inaugural director of the MSU High Performance Computing Center from 2004 to 2006.
His research interests include conformal antennas, engineered materials for microwave applications, and computational electromagnetics. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society, and the Engineering Society of Detroit. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Commission B of the International Scientific Radio Union (URSI). He is a member of the Department of Air Force Scientific Advisory Board.
Kempel pursued electrical engineering and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1989, a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1990, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1994.

Congratulations Graduating Spartan Engineers
Michigan State University will host virtual commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16, for all undergraduate and graduate students earning degrees at the end of the 2020 spring semester. Engineering formalizes leadership roles in CEE and UGS
Two leaders in the College of Engineering are both assuming full-time roles for the interim positions they have held since February. Engineering Dean Leo Kempel announced that Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies (UGS) Amanda Idema will assume responsibility for Undergraduate Studies within the Dean's office and Neeraj Buch, interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), has been named CEE chair.

Several important college leadership positions were established in 2018 -Yue Qi was chosen as Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity; Theo Caldwell was named Assistant Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity; and Katy Colbry was appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Services.

The race is on to create cheap materials to store energy for the U.S power grid, said Mechanical Engineering Department Chair James Klausner. MSU is sharing a $2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). "We think we can return electricity to the grid at less than 5 cents per kilowatt hour," he said.
Construction begins
Embracing the future of teaching and learning, Michigan State University has officially broken ground on the new STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. During the groundbreaking ceremony, MSU Interim President John Engler was joined by faculty, students and staff representing STEM-related colleges as well as members of the Michigan Legislature who supported funding for the project.
New assistant dean
Katy Luchini Colbry has been selected as the assistant dean for Graduate Student Services in the MSU College of Engineering. She has been involved for the past eight years in every major aspect of the graduate studies program in collaboration with Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Faculty Development Manooch Koochesfahani. In her new role, she will work on graduate student recruiting, mentoring, and fostering an environment to grow graduate student resources and fellowship opportunities, along with other day-to-day aspects of growing the graduate program of the college.

Year of Global Africa
With African music, dancing and colorful visuals, the Spartan Marching Band will celebrate Michigan State University's decades-long scholarly engagement with Africa during its halftime show on Saturday, Nov. 18, when MSU plays Maryland in football. The show was originally scheduled for the Penn State game on Saturday, Nov. 4 - but a 3 1/2-hour game delay due to lightning caused the schedule change.
